1964 marked the end of the era of silver in U.S. coinage. For perhaps the last
time ever, the Kennedy half dollar contained 90% silver as did the quarter and
the dime. The Coinage Act of 1965 created "clad" coins from 1965 through 1970,
with the 50-cent piece of 40% silver and a 25-cent piece and a ten-cent piece
containing 75% copper and 25% nickel. In 1971, the 50-cent piece was also
produced in copper-nickel.
